R&A Scholars Education Day

On Wednesday 4th September 2019 Course Manager Richard Johnstone recently attended the R&A Scholars Education Day at St Andrews Links.

The education and golf day was organised by R&A sustainability manager Wendy Cole and hosted by Old Course Supervisor Craig Berry who did an excellent job providing scholars with 4 seminars, a course walk and chance to network with other scholars from around the world.

The seminars were delivered by scholars who work at 4 different courses across the St Andrews links site. John Reid (The Dukes, St Andrews), Craig Berry (The Old Course, St Andrews), Steven Lawlor (The Eden, St Andrews) and Chris Dickson (The Castle, St Andrews). Each presentation was unique to each site with the scholar describing their role, the course, different challenges faced and how the scholarship programme has helped them progress within the industry.

The seminars were then followed by a course walk around the home end of the Old Course and a visit to the course maintenance facility to view the latest TORO machinery.

The R&A Greenkeeping Scholarship programme was established in 2004 To Provide support and Assistance to high achieving students enrolled in professional turf management qualifications. Through close co-operation with selected educational establishments and via a rigorous selection process, The R&A has been able to continually identify the most deserving students to receive scholarships each year. Beyond the direct financial assistance which is available, Scholars also gain access to a number of exclusive networking and continuing professional development opportunities which further enhance industry exposure and employability.
